Check if your region is one of the 388 newest “banking deserts.”

Research found that hundreds of cities have become banking deserts as 388 branches closed in two years.

Places without local banking services include Westhoughton in Bolton, Chapeltown in Sheffield and Todmorden, West Yorks. The Labor analysis found 55 towns were “bankless” despite being promised a hub six months ago.

The party says its plan to give regulators more power could lead to at least 350 banking centers being set up quickly. Since 2015, around 6,000 bank branches in major banks have been closed as customers move online. But those reliant on cash and many small businesses are struggling to access services.

Hubs in areas where the last branch has closed allow customers of any bank to deposit and withdraw cash and checks and ask questions about accounts – 42 have been set up.

Shadow cities minister Tulip Siddiq said if she were in power she would crack down on “ghost streets” and give every community access to banking services.

She added: “The government’s failure to establish banking centers has led to the decline of Britain’s high streets and cut off hundreds of thousands of people and small businesses from the services they need.

“Labour’s plan will bring banking services back to communities.”

Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said: “The days of each bank having its own presence on the high street are over, but shared banking hubs can be an adequate replacement – provided they are rolled out quickly enough. “

“Given that so many older people do not bank online and rely on an in-person visit for at least some transactions, we believe there should be many more shared hubs and that these should be operational before the last bank “The area is allowed to be closed, which often leaves many older customers in the lurch.”

“By allowing the hasty closure of so many bank branches, regardless of whether there are good alternatives available to customers or not, ministers are opening themselves up to criticism for appearing to favor the interests of big business over those of us of all ages not online, and many high street shops and small retailers too.”

Hub operator Cash Access UK said it plans to open 100 new hubs this year.

Cat Farrow, Chief Operating Officer, said: “Banking Hubs make a real difference to people who rely on cash and personal banking services, and to communities more broadly. The UK is one of the few countries in the world where new services such as banking hubs are being opened to support these customers.

“From the day a banking hub is recommended in a city, it takes an average of 12 months for a property to be found and the doors opened. We look for properties in the heart of communities that are accessible to everyone.”

“We are delighted to have opened new hubs in Downham Market, Looe, Royal Wootton Bassett and Shoreham by Sea in recent weeks and plan to have opened 100 banking hubs by the end of the year.”

A Treasury spokesman said: “We know that for many, cash remains king, which is why we have protected access to cash in law – laws to protect access to cash withdrawal and deposit facilities for individuals and businesses.”

“This will support businesses to continue accepting cash by ensuring they have adequate access to facilities to deposit their cash.”
