Mercedes Benz And bmw has unveiled electric concept cars to catch up with Tesla in the premium segment of the market.

At the IAA in Munich, Mercedes presented the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA-Class, while BMW presented the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

These cars are based on all-new platforms from the German automakers, which will form the basis for their two electric car offerings in the coming years, in what is their most aggressive foray into battery-powered vehicles yet.

As these are concept cars, it’s unclear what their final form will be when they are eventually produced. But here’s a closer look at what’s on offer from Mercedes and BMW.

Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA-Class

The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA-Class is based on the so-called Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), a new platform that the German auto giant has developed for electric cars.

The range includes a total of four new models – a four-door coupe, a station wagon and two sports utility vehicles.

Mercedes says the car will have a range of 750 kilometers (466 miles) on a single charge. The company also states that the battery can be charged in just 15 minutes, allowing the car to travel 400 kilometers.

Mercedes praised the fast-charging capabilities and long range of the Concept CLA-Class.

Mercedes has placed great emphasis on the interior and the user experience. The company said it is developing its own operating system for the car, called MB.OS. This supports various functions, from the huge screen to the dashboard to the voice assistant in the car.

In addition, third-party apps, such as your favorite music or video streaming apps, can be integrated into the vehicle.

“This proprietary chip-to-cloud architecture represents a whole new approach for the company and will be a largely hidden but defining aspect of all of its future vehicles,” Mercedes-Benz said in a press release.

Mercedes said it focused on digitizing the interior of the Concept CLA-Class. These include a virtual assistant and third-party app support.

BMW said the car will feature what it calls Panoramic Vision, a head-up display that projects information onto the windshield in the driver’s eyeline.

The company announced that this will initially be available in the New Class. Both passengers and drivers can interact with the panoramic view feature, BMW said.

There was little information about range and charging. But BMW said the new generation of its technology will improve the charging speed of the new class models by up to 30 percent and increase their range by up to 30 percent.

According to BMW, the Vision Neue Klasse electric car has all the classic features that the brand is familiar with. BMW said the aerodynamic 21-inch wheels “pay homage to the classic, motorsport-inspired cross-spoke design.”
