England vs Brazil LIVE: Result and reaction after late Endrick goal

Gareth Southgate leads the sporting world’s messages of support for Princess of Wales

England suffered their first defeat since the World Cup in Qatar as 17-year-old striker Endrick’s late winner gave Brazil a deserved 1-0 friendly win at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate’s side were hoping to continue preparations for Euro 2024 this summer – but with captain Harry Kane injured and Jude Bellingham frustrated, the Three Lions lacked a creative spark.

Brazil came closest in the first half, hitting the post through Lucas Paqueta and taking the lead in the 80th minute when substitute Endrick slotted in after Jordan Pickford parried Vinicius Jr’s shot.

Pacqueta was fortunate to receive a second yellow card after one of several fouls on Bellingham – while Southgate would also have added Kyle Walker to his long injury list ahead of Tuesday’s game against Belgium.

Endrick gives England and Gareth Southgate another problem to resolve ahead of Euro 2024

Following the controversy surrounding the new England jersey, there are concerns about the players wearing it. After the unnecessary culture wars, Gareth Southgate now has more important football decisions to make. A year that could mean a 58-minute final for England began with a first defeat since the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and a performance that saw them defy notions that they could be favorites for Euro 2024.

A glamor game didn’t live up to its billing, but the excitement was provided by a toning down Selecao Team. On a night when many young England players were hoping to make an indelible impression, the rookie who wrote his name into history was instead Endrick, the 17-year-old who became the youngest goalscorer in a senior international at Wembley. stadium became. For their more experienced manager Dorival Junior a 26thTh and the most prestigious job brought an ideal start.

But England’s performance was less good than mediocre. The players who needed to play well didn’t; or not, to the point where Southgate’s selection dilemma for the summer can be solved. Paper planes were thrown into the crowd, but too few players booked their seats on the flight to Germany.

Jude Bellingham’s kick against Brazil sends England a warning ahead of Euro 2024

Jude Bellingham at his best was a sight that Wembley was slowly getting used to. Bent over, the ball almost dangles from the outstretched toes, dynamic and yet in perfect balance. Then came Brazil. The beautiful game? Good yoga? Not tonight. Instead, you have to give in to the tactical foul: the sight of Bellingham lying on his back proved to be a rather frustrating image in this 1-0 defeat.

Further comments from Southgate

Here’s some more of what Southgate said to Channel 4 after the game.

Of Gordon, he says the winger “was excellent on both sides of his game” while Chilwell was “aggressive in his defense and gave us that width.”

“We must handle him carefully so that he, [Harry] Maguire, Jew [Bellingham]“We had to physically get them off the pitch and that didn’t help the rhythm of the game.”

As for Walker’s injury, he said he didn’t know how bad it was.

“He’s feeling something but he’s not a player who gets injured very often so he’s not quite sure what it is so we’ll have to assess it in the next few days.”

Southgate later confirmed to the media that Harry Kane would return to Germany to continue his recovery from his injury.

Southgate speaks to Channel 4

The England manager will be the first to speak to the media after the game.

He says that England “controlled the game at times” and had “as many shots on goal” as their opponents, but “in the end it is this ruthless moment that decides the game.”

He adds that there were some “really important individual performances for us” and praises both Ben Chilwell and Anthony Gordon.

Asked if this is the kind of game England need to prepare for tournaments, he calls it a “classic game against a South American team”.

“More cards are likely to be dealt in competition and that affects the flow of the game.

“I’m really happy with a lot of these performances.

“When you lose it becomes negative, but you have to have context.”

FULL TIME: England – Brazil 0-1

A slightly sobering defeat for England, who were certainly hoping for a positive result from this game.

Team selection is somewhat irrelevant due to the absences and the nature of the friendlies, but it will be questionable whether certain players have enough to start at Euro 2024 in Germany.

An undeniably positive result for Brazil. Even if there had been a draw, they were impressive at times despite missing several first team players. Endrick has obviously announced himself on the world stage, but Vini Jr, Rodrygo and Paqueta have all put in particularly impressive performances.
