Millions will be hit by FOUR major law increases as the national living wage rises

What is a tax credit?

Tax credits are a type of government benefit. There are two different types: Workforce Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

Working tax credits are designed for people who earn low earned income.

Child tax credits apply to those with children who may or may not be working.

You can claim one or both tax credits.

Both aim to help lower-income households meet daily needs.

Council tax increases

Almost all local authorities in England and Wales will increase tax by the maximum amount in April.

Of the 136 authorities that have already announced their council tax proposals for next year, 128 (94%) want to increase bills by 4.99% in April.

This is the highest amount the government will allow without having to hold a local referendum.

According to the County Councils Network (CCN), which published the figures, 75% of councils intended to push through the maximum increase last year.

The 5% increase represents an increase of £103.25 per year for the typical Category D property, which currently stands at £2,065.

When will broadband bills go up?

Millions of broadband, mobile and TV customers will be hit by huge bill increases this month.

This is because telecommunications providers usually increase the prices of their contracts in the spring.

Providers usually increase their prices annually in line with the inflation rate plus up to 3.9% more.

The December CPI value (4%) or the January RPI value (4.9%) are used by many mobile and broadband companies to increase prices.

The increases come into effect for millions of customers starting today.

This means that the new tariff will take effect from your next bill.

The upper limits for child benefit have been raised

The government is increasing the threshold at which parents must start repaying child benefit from £50,000 to £60,000.

Meanwhile, the cap at which parents must pay back all of their child benefit will rise from £60,000 to £80,000.

This means you can get more child benefit for those where one partner earns between £50,000 and £60,000.

Meanwhile, those earning £60,000 to £80,000 will now receive some child benefit, whereas this is currently not the case.

Laura added: “The catch is that the benefit is based on the income of both parents – meaning if one of you earns more than the thresholds, you lose eligibility for the benefit.”

“Families also have to apply for child benefit; they do not receive it automatically.”

Could you get free recipes?

If you are 60 or older, you can request free prescriptions from your local pharmacy.

In England, prescriptions typically cost £9.65 each, so there can be significant savings over a year.

This benefit is automatic and there is no need to apply for it.

If you are 60 or over you are also entitled to a free NHS eye test. So you should inform your optician when you are 60 years old if you have not already done so.

Eye tests can usually cost between £20 and £30.

Free memberships and activities at PIP

Those who claim PIP can often receive discounts on day trips and memberships.

From cinema, theater, galleries to travel, several companies offer the discount.

Disability Support Scope has a useful page on some of the discounts you can receive.
