Virginia Cavaliers honor three football players killed in school shooting in 2022

The Virginia Cavaliers football program is set to honor three players killed in the 2022 campus shooting at a pregame ceremony ahead of the team’s home game against James Madison University on Saturday.

Dubbed the “UVA Strong” game, it will honor D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler, who lost their lives after former UVA football player Christopher Jones Jr. allegedly opened fire on a returning charter bus from a Field trip to Washington, DC to the campus

It’s the first home game Virginia will play at Scott Stadium since Nov. 12, 2022, a day before the players were killed and two others injured in the shooting.

UVA announced that the first 35,000 fans entering Scott Stadium for the game against the Dukes will receive an “Orange Out” t-shirt with “UVA Strong” written on it.

The pre-game ceremony begins at 11:30am, one hour after the gates open. All fans, whether given a t-shirt at the gate or not, are encouraged to wear orange.

Virginia Football posted a small clip on their social media platforms to heat up the game, in which the numbers 1, 15 and 41 represent the three players. Davis Jr. wore #1, Chandler wore #15, and Perry wore #41.

It also appears that at least one end zone has “UVA Strong” written with the players’ last names and numbers throughout the game.

Family members and friends of Davis Jr., Perry and Chandler will be there for the Cavaliers’ traditional “Wahoo Walk” as they arrive at Scott Stadium for the game and will be cheered on by fans.

Chandler and Davis Jr. were wide receivers for the Cavaliers. Chandler played two seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers before moving to Virginia for his junior season. He never got to play with Virginia last season.

Davis Jr. played in eight games as a senior last season, catching 16 receptions for 371 yards with two touchdowns.

Perry played three seasons with the Cavaliers as a linebacker, made nine tackles in eight games and registered a sack with a pick six.

Jones was charged with three counts of second-degree murder, five counts of use of a firearm in a first felony, and two counts of malicious assault. He will face a grand jury next month.

The Cavaliers went 3-7 overall last season before canceling the remaining games on their schedule after the shootout.
